Mochalov – “Two” (1991) Original Oil Painting – LOCAL PICKUP ONLY

Local pickup only at our gallery in Costa Mesa, California. This painting is not shipped.

"Two" ("Dvoe" in Russian) is a large original oil on canvas by Russian painter Alexander Petrovich Mochalov (also transliterated Motchalov; born 1952), painted in 1991. Two nude figures lie entwined across the canvas, their bodies folded into one rhythm of faceted planes in warm cream, ochre and peach, drawn in fine dark line against a flaming red and orange ground. Elongated hands with spread fingers, dark hair and mask-like faces hold the composition together, so the picture reads both as an embrace and as a study in interlocking geometric form.

Mochalov was born in Kirov (Vyatka), Russia, graduated from the Kirov Art School in 1972 and has been a member of the Union of Artists of Russia since 1996. He was named Honored Artist of the Russian Federation in 2011. His paintings are held by the Vyatka Art Museum and the Pavlodar Art Museum, and in 2019 one of his works was shown in the Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts in London. The simplified, elongated figures and faceted, cubist-inspired construction that writers link to Modigliani and early 20th-century modernism are fully present in this canvas from the last year of the Soviet era.

The painting is monogrammed "AM" in a circle and dated 1991 at the lower right. On the reverse the artist has written in Russian his name, the title, the medium (oil on canvas), the canvas size (142.5 × 81.5 cm) and the year. It is presented in a gilt wood frame with a beaded edge, a natural linen liner and a gold inner slip. With a canvas almost five feet wide, it is a statement piece for a living room, a dining room, a hotel or a restaurant, and for collectors of Russian art and of figurative modernism.

Artist: Alexander Petrovich Mochalov (Motchalov), Russian, born 1952

Title and date: "Two," 1991

Canvas size: 56" W × 32" H (142.5 × 81.5 cm, per the artist's inscription)

Overall size (framed): approximately 63" W × 40" H

Orientation: Horizontal (landscape)

Medium: Oil on canvas, on a wooden stretcher with a center crossbar

Subject: Two nude figures, cubist-inspired figurative composition

Frame: Gilt wood frame with beaded edge, linen liner and gold inner slip

Front protection: None

Marks & signature: Monogram "AM" in a circle with the date 1991, lower right; artist's handwritten inscription in Russian on the reverse

Era / Circa: 1991

Condition: Good vintage condition with light age-related wear.
