TransfersAn original oil on canvas by Russian painter Alexander Petrovich Mochalov (also transliterated Motchalov; born 1952), titled "Woman in Bed" and dated 1992. A reclining female nude is built from sweeping, interlocking curves in glowing orange and ochre, drawn in fine dark line and set against a faceted slate-gray ground. The mask-like face, with its long straight nose and almond eyes, gives the figure a calm, monumental presence.
Mochalov was born in Kirov (Vyatka), Russia, graduated from the Kirov Art School in 1972 and has been a member of the Union of Artists of Russia since 1996. He was named Honored Artist of the Russian Federation in 2011. His paintings are held by the Vyatka Art Museum and the Pavlodar Art Museum, and in 2019 one of his works was shown in the Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts in London. Writers on his work note the influence of Modigliani and of early 20th-century modernism in his elongated, simplified figures, qualities that are clearly present in this early-1990s canvas.
The painting is monogrammed "AM" in a circle and dated at the lower left. It comes from the Allen Collection and keeps its handwritten inventory tag on the reverse: "BAC #288,
