An antique oil on canvas portrait showing the sitter in strict profile, facing left, with curling auburn hair and a loose white linen shirt with a turned-down collar, set against a deep, almost black background. Painted in the manner of the 17th-century Dutch and Flemish masters, the face is modelled in warm, rosy flesh tones with soft light, and the restrained palette gives the work a quiet, serious presence.

The painting is unsigned and is offered as Continental (European) School, without attribution to a specific artist. We date it to the 18th–19th century on the basis of its materials and condition: fine age craquelure across the entire paint surface, with broader drying cracks in the dark background; an old relining (the original canvas has been backed with a second canvas); and an old hand-made softwood strainer with oxidized surfaces and old worm holes. The lower bar carries an old inventory number, "A.654", in black, and a small fragment of antique printed paper remains attached to the reverse. The dating is our opinion from visual examination only; the painting has not been laboratory tested.

The portrait is presented in a later decorative frame in gold and deep burgundy with raised corner and centre ornaments. The frame is modern, not of the period. A strong piece for collectors of Old Master style portraiture and antique European painting, and for traditional, library or dark academia interiors and gallery walls.
