"Lady in Red" is a large original oil on canvas, signed by the artist S. Tojin. A draped woman is seated in a chair, emerging from a field of deep crimson and black, the whole composition built up in heavy palette-knife impasto — paint laid on thickly enough that the surface catches the light and shifts as you move past it. It was made to be read from across a room, and it holds that room once it is hung.

The appraisal describes the artist as Asian, trained in both Asia and Europe, working chiefly with female subjects, and characterised by heavy palette work and vivid colouration — all of which this canvas bears out.

Scale is the second thing people notice after the colour. The canvas alone is 30 by 40 inches; in its deep ornate gilt-and-burgundy frame the piece measures roughly 60 by 47 inches overall. This is a wall-defining work rather than wall decor — the kind of painting that anchors a double-height entry, a stair landing, a dining room or a lobby.
